every sunday on my drive to church i pass the royal ontario museum and every sunday i cringe at the sight of it. what used to be a beautiful architectural piece of art now looks as if a crystal mediorite fell on it from the heavens above! it totally ruined the integrity of the historic building, but that's only my opinion.
this type of architecture is very much the kind of work architect Daniel Libeskind creates. for example this jewish museum in san fran. california
or the denver art museum in colorado

very modern and almost futuristic but i just don't think he should have had this big crystal like ball pertruding out of such a historic and beatuiful building.
what do you guys think???
like or dislike?

Hmmmm.... I'm torn! Those are pretty interesting designs, but it is sad the first one so completely overwhelms that historic building.
That said, I do think juxtaposition of styles is cool.
i agree with you that his designs are very interesting but you're right, in the ROM's case, the design completely overwhelms the exhisting building.
It's about... odd, but gotta hand it to the designer to think outside the box.
Literally.
he's quite creative, definitely.
i just wish he wouldn't have dropped his creativity on such a historic building!
Overall I think this kind of architecture is egotistical and ultimately dated for destruction. There is no flow, and no respect for or collaboration with nature. If all buildings in the future are eventually constructed like this than perhaps I would feel differently, but this is definitely bullshit manmade architecture. It reminds me of the Seattle Public Library, which is touted by architecture schools the world over, but really just a tacky, revoltingly sterile box for homeless people to hang out in.
I have to say, I'm totally with you on this one. I couldn't believe it when I drove past it for the first time this summer. I loved the old building and this addition is just so out of place and way too huge for the street!
It seems a bit Gehry-esque I think. It might have been OK if set apart a bit as I.M. Pei did at the Louvre. Then the contrast would have showcased both!
This is like the Guggenheim in Bilbano and the that other building in New York, and one in Los Angeles. I think they will date very quickly indeed. I think that in 30 years time people will look at them and be embarrassed.
i don't think it'll take 30 yrs .. i'm already embarassed for TOronto.
